What is all this about Colon Health and cleansing and detoxifying? Is it just so much more hype? Is it some new discovery? Let me try to put it into perspective.  We have all heard about parasites, right; little creatures that can live in a host body and feed off it for years? Well, you say, I always wash my fruit.  Well, good for you.  Did you say always? Do your friends when you eat there? What about that fruit tree in the yard, do you run in and scour it before you eat it's "fresh from the tree goodness"?  Right.  And that is just one example.  The world is full of happy little creatures who just love to co-exist with us, or should I say IN us.  In some cases, we couldn't live without them, for example the Good bacteria that live warm and comfy in our intestines, such as Bifidobacterium bifidum.  But the Bad creatures, the parasites that can jeopardize you colon health - tapeworms,  hookworms, and more that I won't even attempt to spell ( here is a pretty scary list)

And let's not for get about the foods we eat.  

After all, as the old saying goes, "You are what you eat" so what are you?  What have we become because of the foods we eat? Processed foods, hydrogenated oils, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors, enriched bleached flour. What exactly is in a Quarter Pound hamburger?  With our busy schedules these days we are relying more and more on convenience and fast foods.  Even though we keep hearing that they are bad for us.  Have you noticed the effects on your energy? Your Skin? Your waistline? A new slant on that old saying might be "You ARE what you DON'T eliminate."  What are we hanging on to, and why?  The options in mainstream health care are limited - Diet and exercise.   

While Diet and exercise are really excellent ways to get your body into better shape, losing weight, improving circulation and often increasing the metabolism, it does nothing to improve Colon Health or free your body of the parasites or collected waste we walk around with daily.  So, what do do?

Colon cleansing is a procedure in which the colon is cleansed of toxins in order to improve the overall body health of a person. The colon is an organ in the body that is used to extract water and salts from feces. It is more commonly known as the large intestine.

One of the main functions of the colon is to maintain the balance of water in the body. It does this by storing water and reclaiming water as the need arises.

The colon needs to be cleansed as it is continually filled with various toxins and mucus buildup as part of the body's normal function. Psyllium is a natural, water-soluble, gel-reducing fiber that is extracted from the husks of blond psyllium seeds. It is also a member of a class of soluble fibers referred to as mucilages. These mucilages are used as thickening and stabilizing agents in most salad dressings, lotions, soup and creams.

Psyllium is used to fight a variety of digestive problems such as constipation, diarrhea, diverticular disease and colitis. It is utilized by most colon cleansing programs as a means of preventing colon cancer. This is because most of the diet of people today is made up of meat products, fats and sugar that are often low in fiber content. These foods tend to slow down intestinal transit time resulting in irregular bowel movements.

Moreover, these types of foods usually take two days to transit the intestines, often resulting in constipation. An irregular bowel movement allows for bacterial putrefaction and exposes you to carcinogenic substances within the colon.

Dietary fibers help in stool bulking as well as in softening stools. Dietary fibers are also useful in cases of diarrhea since they slow down a too rapid transmit time. It stabilizes bowel movements and often times is used to control alternating cases of diarrhea and constipation. Dietary fibers also encourage the growth of friendly intestinal bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilous and bifidobacteria that are very helpful in regulating bowel movement.

There is only one problem with dietary fibers; they have the tendency to slow down the stomach’s emptying of food into the small intestine and increase blood glucose instead. On the positive side, dietary fibers are also found to stimulate pancreatic enzymes that can be beneficial in the management of diabetes.
